Under the ground we stand on, there is a complex and busy network of pipes and cables. In the Netherlands, there is not enough space underground to accommodate all the necessary infrastructure and excavation damage leads to large money losses every year. To tackle these problems, the VKLS project — Verticaal kabels- en leidingensysteem in Dutch — focuses on a vertical cables and pipes system as a possible solution.
Gemeente Leiden, TUE, and other stakeholders are testing the use of a steel rack to better structure and organize subterranean cables and pipes. With this solution, it may be possible to save space and better organize the underground infrastructure.
Contributing to this mission, Senergetics provided sensors to monitor the bending of the underground pipes of the VKLS project. Last week (10/07), the strain sensors, which use photonics technology, were successfully installed at one-meter intervals along the pipes. This is the start of a year-long collaboration, and we thank Gemeente Leiden and TUE for their trust and support!
